Man, he was totally lying. Look at him, stumbling over his words, barely able to pull it together and muster up a full, complete sentence at first. Trying and failing to CONVINCE Steve that he wasn’t right. But he was, and they both knew it. Evidently he didn’t expect to be put on the spot. He saw his posturing, the extent he went to lengthen his limbs and emphasize his height. Steve clicked his tongue. Maybe he should lay off a little, but it was pretty funny. ❛ Huh…So Little Wheeler DOES have a crush. ❜ In contrast to Mike’s blatant denial of the facts, Steve was naturally honest. He sounded almost pleased. ❛ Don’t worry kid, I can keep a secret.

Not like he could tell Nancy since she would QUESTION where the information came from. Then he would HAVE to explain the whole ordeal about getting caught sneaking onto the rooftop and Mike biking off and that would just not look or sound good on his part — for more than one reason.

That’s okay. It takes a few years to master the skills I’ve come to know. ❜ There wasn’t any hint of self doubt or irony, he meant what he was saying. He had been with enough girls to know what he was doing, although Nancy was the closest to something entirely new. No girl he had been with was like Nancy. ❛ You would probably do the polite thing and knock on the front door, WOULDN’T you? ❜ Steve cocked his head to one side; the answer was written all over his little, freckled face without even needing to be stated. ❛ But let me tell you now before you get much older and start trying to pursue your crush. Fathers tend to DISLIKE seeing a boy interested in their girl.

❝ Thanks for the advice, I guess. ❞

His statement is uncertain, poised more like a question than a statement, and he’s stuck standing there trying to figure out why this conversation just had to happen in the first place. Wrinkling his nose up and rolling back down to his natural height, Mike averts his gaze off to the side, but although his eyes linger on a car parked across the street he wouldn’t be able to tell you what make or model it was, or even what color it was—-he failed to take anything in, looking but not really seeing, all in an attempt to shake off the defensive demeanor Steve had managed to rile up in a matter of seconds. He’d be embarrassed by the fact, but he tries not to dwell on it too much for the sake of turning the subject away from him and back towards the other.

❝ My dad doesn’t seem all that worried about you and Nancy, though—-I don’t even really think he cares, since he didn’t really say anything when you got brought up before. Don’t really think you have to worry about the whole ‘I went to jail once, and I’m not afraid to go back,’ speech from him. ❞

Finally, his full attention is back on the older boy, expression serious even as he mocks his father’s voice and briefly rolls his eyes—-he was a stereotypical dad in a lot of ways, but definitely not like that
